Staffordshire faces an important challenge - get in touch!

Your latest Smart Alert.

How do we protect our health and care services against a background of an aging population and services already under considerable strain?

Part of the solution is for more people to make lifestyle choices that will enable them to stay healthy and well for longer to help reduce the demand that our services are seeing.

Staffordshire's Health and Wellbeing Board would welcome your views on what we can all do to help people make good lifestyle choices.

Please click on the link below to find out more and give your feedback.  There are only 5 questions and a short section about yourself so this should take just a few minutes to complete.

Thank you for your help with one of the most important challenges facing Staffordshire today.

HMRC Warns on Tax Refund Scams

HMRC is calling on people to stay vigilant in the fight against fraudsters, who are using email and text messages to scam them out of their savings.
The tax authority is currently processing tax refunds after the end of the 2017 to 2018 tax year. However, criminals are taking advantage of this by sending out scam emails and SMS-messages to trick the public into thinking they have received a tax rebate so they hand over their account and personal details.

Forces Help to Buy - Scheme Ends This Year

What is the Forces Help to Buy Scheme? (UK)
If you’re a regular serviceman or servicewoman in the armed forces, the Forces Help to Buy scheme could let you borrow up to 50% of your salary to a maximum of £25,000, interest free. This loan is for buying your first home or moving to another property on assignment or as your family’s needs change.
All regular service personnel are eligible who:
  • have completed the pre-requisite length of service
  • have more than 6 months left to serve at the time they apply
  • meet the right medical categories.
However, there may be instances where exceptions to the standard rules may be justifiable, especially where you have extenuating medical and personal circumstances.
You can apply for the loan online through the Joint Personnel Administration system and can seek advice on your application through your chain of command and personnel agency.

The pilot scheme, which launched in April 2014 and extended to 2018 aims to address the low rate of home ownership in the armed forces.

Children’s Emergency Services at County Hospital Temporarily Suspended on Safety Grounds

Accident and Emergency services at County Hospital in Stafford have been suspended for children and people under the age of 18. The interim measure, which will come into effect from 10am from Thursday 25 August 2016, has been instigated by the Trust Board at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust because senior clinicians have advised that the service is not currently clinically safe.  Adult Accident and Emergency is not affected and remains open 14 hours a day between 8am and 10pm.

AFF Welcomes Support for Service Pupils in Wales

AFF welcomes support for Service pupils in Wales

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is delighted to hear that a new £200,000 fund to support Service families in Wales has been announced by the Welsh Government. In 2017, the charity sent a detailed brief, on families' behalf, to the Education Minister Kirsty Williams, highlighting the need for targeted pupil funding for Armed Forces children in Wales, and they are pleased to see that this important issue has now been recognised

Families voices heard
In England, this funding is provided by the Service Pupil Premium, and AFF has frequently received feedback from families who felt their children were at a disadvantage in Wales.
Using their views as a platform, AFF has advocated a similar scheme to support Service children in Wales. The charity sees this newly announced provision as a positive first step to increased support in more areas of the UK.

Ensuring school support
The Education Minister said: "Service children often have to move schools at very short notice, and can also face the anxiety of having a parent away on active service. That's why we need to ensure schools are there to support them."

AFF's Regional Manager for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Annabel Ingram said: "AFF works hard in our devolved nations to ensure parity across the UK for all our Service families. We're very pleased for our families in Wales, who will now see their children receive support to deal with the unique challenges of life as a Service family."

The fund will be administered by the Supporting Service Children in Education (SSCE) Project, and schools are encouraged to make a bid this school term to access funding ready for the new school year in September.

Staffordshire Police Fraud Alert: TV Provider Discount Fraud

We want to make people aware of a scam involving false TV discounts that have been taking place in other parts of the country.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has noticed an increase in reports where fraudsters are cold-calling victims, claiming to be from a television provider and offering a discount on their monthly subscription.

Victims have been told the following: their subscription needs to be renewed; that part or all of the TV equipment has expired and they are due an upgrade on the equipment.

In order to falsely process the discount, the fraudster asks victims to confirm or provide their bank account details. The scammers may also request the victim's identification documents, such as scanned copies of passports.

The fraudsters are using the following telephone numbers: 0844711144402035190197 and 08001514141. The fraudsters' voices are reported to sound feminine and have an Asian accent.

Later victims make enquiries and then discover that their TV service provider did not call them and that the fraudster has made transactions using the victim's bank account details.

Since the beginning of this year there have been 300 Action Fraud reports relating to this scam. From the reports received, victims aged over 66 seem to be the most targeted.

So far we are not aware of any such incidents in Staffordshire, but we want to warn people to be on their guard. If you receive or have received such a call, please call us on 101 and report it.

Visit https://www.staffordshire.police.uk/article/9280/TV-Provider-Discount-Fraud---April-2018 for more information and advice.
